Statement from the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) On the Passing of Dr Abdul Khaliq Kazi
18/03/2026
Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) expresses its deepest condolences to the family of Dr Abdul Khaliq Kazi, and to the wider Muslim community across Australia, following the news of his passing.
Dr Kazi was one of the pioneering figures of the Australian Muslim community and played a foundational role in the establishment of national Muslim representation in this country. He served as the founding President of the Australian Federation of Islamic Societies (AFIS), the national body that later evolved into the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC). Through his leadership and vision, he helped lay the institutional foundations that continue to serve the Muslim community in Australia today.

Allah reminds us in the Qur’an:
“Every soul shall taste death, and you will only be given your full compensation on the Day of Resurrection.”
(Qur’an 3:185)
and:
“Indeed we belong to Allah, and indeed to Him we will return.”
(Qur’an 2:156)
The President of AFIC, Dr Rateb Jneid, said Dr Kazi’s passing marks the loss of one of the early builders of Muslim community institutions in Australia.
“Dr Abdul Khaliq Kazi belonged to a remarkable generation of pioneers who worked tirelessly to establish the foundations of organised Muslim life in Australia. As the founding President of the national federation that later became AFIC, his contribution to the development of our institutions and community life cannot be overstated. On behalf of AFIC, I extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones. May Allah forgive his shortcomings, envelop him in His mercy, and grant him the highest place in Jannat al-Firdous.”
Allah says:
“O tranquil soul, return to your Lord, well-pleased and pleasing. Enter among My servants and enter My Paradise.”
(Qur’an 89:27–30)
AFIC joins the Muslim community across Australia in praying that Allah (SWT) grants Dr Abdul Khaliq Kazi forgiveness, mercy and the highest place in Jannah, and grants patience and comfort to his family and loved ones during this difficult time.
Inna lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji’un.
