AFIC Condemns Israel’s Interception of Gaza Aid Flotilla and Calls for Concrete Australian Action

Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) strongly condemns Israel’s interception of the Global Sumud flotilla in international waters and the subsequent detention and degrading treatment of humanitarian activists, including eleven Australians.
The flotilla was carrying humanitarian aid and seeking to break the unlawful siege imposed on Gaza. Its interception in international waters represents a serious breach of international law and a further demonstration of Israel’s disregard for legal accountability, human dignity and the most basic principles of humanitarian protection.
AFIC President Dr Rateb Jneid said the treatment of the detained activists, including reports and footage of bound detainees being mocked and humiliated by Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, was appalling.
“These activists were not criminals. They were humanitarian volunteers seeking to deliver aid to a starving and besieged population,” Dr Jneid said.
“The interception of the flotilla was itself unlawful and unacceptable. The subsequent humiliation and mistreatment of detained activists only confirms the contempt with which Israel continues to treat international law, humanitarian workers and the global community.”
AFIC welcomes the fact that the Australian Government has raised concerns about the treatment of Australian citizens. However, words of concern, disappointment and occasional condemnation are no longer enough.
For more than two and a half years, Australia and other governments have repeatedly expressed concern while Israel has continued to bomb civilians, destroy hospitals, starve the people of Gaza, block humanitarian aid, attack journalists and aid workers, and act with impunity in the face of credible allegations of war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
Dr Jneid said Australia’s response must now move beyond diplomatic language. Israel understands that statements alone carry no consequence. If Australia continues to respond to war crimes and violations of international law with nothing more than words, then those words become meaningless. The Australian Government must stop treating these atrocities as matters of diplomatic discomfort and start responding to them as serious breaches of international law.
AFIC calls on the Australian Government to:
1.    formally condemn Israel’s interception of the flotilla in international waters;
2.    demand a full and independent investigation into the detention and treatment of the activists;
3.    ensure the safe return and full consular support of all Australian citizens involved;
4.    impose meaningful consequences on Israel, including targeted sanctions against officials responsible for abuses;
5.    suspend military, defence and trade cooperation that may contribute to Israel’s ongoing violations; and
6.    support international legal processes seeking accountability for war crimes, crimes against humanity and genocide.
AFIC also expresses its solidarity with the detained activists, their families, and all humanitarian workers who continue to risk their safety to expose the suffering of the Palestinian people and deliver aid where governments have failed to act.
The attack on this flotilla must not be treated as an isolated incident. It forms part of a broader pattern of Israeli impunity, where humanitarian assistance is obstructed, civilian life is devastated, and those who seek to bear witness are punished.
Australia must decide whether it will continue issuing statements from the sidelines or take concrete action consistent with its obligations under international law and its professed commitment to human rights.
