AFIC Condemns Deadly Attacks on Civilians and Airports in Saudi Arabia

Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) strongly condemns the recent missile attacks by Houthi forces against civilian areas and infrastructure in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, which have resulted in significant loss of life and hundreds of injuries.
The latest attacks on King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh have reportedly killed at least 14 people and injured more than 300 others, including passengers and airport personnel. These attacks follow a series of strikes against civilian infrastructure in Saudi Arabia and represent a deeply concerning escalation in the conflict.
AFIC unequivocally condemns attacks that deliberately target civilians or civilian infrastructure. Airports, places of worship, residential areas and other civilian facilities must never be treated as legitimate military targets simply because of their location within a country involved in conflict.

AFIC President Dr Rateb Jneid said:

“The deliberate targeting of civilians is indefensible, regardless of who carries out the attacks or the political and military circumstances surrounding them. Innocent people going about their daily lives should never have to fear being killed or injured by missiles and other weapons of war.”
AFIC is also deeply concerned that the renewed escalation in Yemen and Saudi Arabia threatens to deepen an already devastating humanitarian crisis and expose further civilian populations to violence, displacement and suffering.
International humanitarian law requires all parties to distinguish between military objectives and civilian populations and infrastructure. These obligations are not optional and must be respected by all parties, irrespective of their political or military objectives.

Dr Jneid added:
“The people of Yemen and the wider region have endured years of conflict and immense suffering. Further escalation will only compound that suffering. We call on all parties to respect international law, protect civilian lives and pursue a peaceful resolution rather than continuing a cycle of violence and retaliation.”
AFIC extends its sincere condolences to the families of those killed, prays for the swift recovery of those injured and expresses its solidarity with all civilians affected by these attacks.
AFIC calls on the international community to intensify diplomatic efforts to prevent further escalation and support a lasting and peaceful resolution to the conflict.
