Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l: Councillor Sylvia Alafaci has been elected Deputy Mayor of the City of Canada Bay, following a vote at the public Council Meeting held on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, at the Canada Bay Civic Centre in Drummoyne, New South Wales.
Her election represents an important milestone in a career characterised by community service, multicultural engagement and a strong commitment to fostering connections between local communities, business and the wider international community.
Elected to the City of Canada Bay Council in 2024, Councillor Alafaci has worked to represent residents across one of Sydney’s most culturally diverse local government areas and has taken an active interest in matters relating to community infrastructure, education, transport, local development and multicultural engagement.
Born in South Korea and long established in Australia, Councillor Alafaci brings to public life a perspective shaped by both her Korean heritage and her deep connection to Australia. Over many years, she has developed strong relationships across a broad range of multicultural communities, including the Korean, Chinese, Italian and wider Asian-Australian communities.
Beyond local government, Councillor Alafaci is Secretary and a co-founder of the Australian Business Summit Council Inc. (ABSC Inc.), a not-for-profit organisation dedicated to promoting business, trade, investment and international engagement. Through ABSC, she has played an important role in bringing together Australian and international business leaders, diplomats, government representatives, academics and community leaders.
She is also closely involved with EKONOMOS, ABSC’s international business affairs publication, which provides a platform for ambassadors, senior business figures, academics and other contributors to share perspectives on global commerce, diplomacy and economic cooperation.
Councillor Alafaci’s longstanding community involvement has also included service through Rotary and participation in numerous multicultural and civic initiatives.
Her election as Deputy Mayor reflects another chapter in a longstanding commitment to public and community service. In her new role, Councillor Alafaci will continue working alongside the Mayor, fellow Councillors and the community in serving the residents of the City of Canada Bay.
