Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has used his first appearance at the United Nations General Assembly to position Australia within global debates on climate change, digital safety, and the Middle East peace process.
During the 80th session in New York, Mr Albanese delivered Australia’s National Statement, affirming Canberra’s strong support for the UN and multilateral cooperation. He described his visit as an opportunity to advance both Australia’s national interests and the shared concerns of the international community.
At UN Headquarters, Mr Albanese hosted a forum with world leaders on protecting children in the digital age, highlighting Australia’s new minimum age laws for social media use. He stated, “It was important to highlight global issues at the United Nations that matter to everyday Australians, including the protection of young people online and the global transition to net-zero.”
Climate action was another key priority. Mr Albanese unveiled Australia’s 2035 emissions reduction target at the UN Secretary-General’s Special High-Level Event on Climate Action, emphasising the country’s commitment to the global transition.
In addition, Mr Albanese promoted Australia’s Future Made in Australia program, meeting senior US business leaders to underline the nation’s appeal as a hub for green investment. “I was also proud to bring Australia to the world stage and showcase our Future Made in Australia agenda,” he noted.
In a significant diplomatic step, Australia joined international partners in recognising the State of Palestine. Mr Albanese also participated in the Two-State Solution Conference, co-hosted by France and Saudi Arabia, marking Australia’s support for global efforts toward peace.
Reflecting on the week, Mr Albanese said, “This visit was focused on advancing Australia’s national and economic interests. I am pleased to have had the opportunity to engage with world leaders on the issues we face as an international community and advocate for Australia’s interests.”
“Global challenges require global action, and it’s only together we can solve the problems we face as an international community.”
