Excelsior Street Traffic Crisis Demands Urgent Action Before Tragedy Strikes

Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
There is an urgent need for a comprehensive traffic and safety study of Excelsior Street through Merrylands and Guildford, including an assessment of the growing number of large trucks obstructing traffic and restricting access to and from residential properties.
Local road authorities must recognise that traffic volumes along Excelsior Street have increased dramatically and are now comparable to those experienced on Woodville Road. However, unlike Woodville Road, Excelsior Street lacks many of the essential safety measures needed to protect residents, motorists and pedestrians.
Much of the increased congestion appears to result from cars and heavy vehicles diverting from Oxford Street through Osgood Street and onto Excelsior Street. Excessive speeding, combined with heavy traffic and large trucks parked along the roadway, has created an increasingly dangerous environment and heightened the risk of serious accidents.
Woodville Road is comparatively safer because parking is restricted, and the road is equipped with traffic lights, speed cameras and other safety controls. By contrast, Excelsior Street permits cars and large trucks to park along sections of the road while having no speed cameras, limited roundabouts, no traffic lights and insufficient traffic-calming measures.
This situation is unsafe and unacceptable. Relevant authorities must treat it as a priority by conducting an immediate traffic study and considering stronger safety measures, including parking restrictions for heavy vehicles, speed monitoring, traffic cameras, additional roundabouts and other appropriate traffic-calming infrastructure.
Action must be taken before congestion worsens or a more serious incident occurs. Residents should not have to wait for a tragedy before their concerns are heard and meaningful safety improvements are introduced.
