Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
Trump claims US and Iran have reached deal on Strait of Hormuz ahead of further talks
Donald Trump says the US has reached a deal with Iran on the Strait of Hormuz, and an agreement to denuclearise the country is within reach.
Iran has not yet responded to the US president's claim.
Trump said that Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar and Iran had asked him to call off military strikes due to take place this weekend.
"When the allies ask to call it off, you’ve got to sort of say, well let's see," he told reporters on Air Force One on Sunday.
"The reason they asked is they think there's a deal, there's a deal on Hormuz and there will be a deal on the nuclear – or you might call it the denuclearisation of Iran, I call it the denuclearisation of Iran."
Trump said further talks with Iran will take place on Monday afternoon.
"We're talking to them in the form of a negotiation, it begins tomorrow afternoon," he said.
Trump also reiterated threats to strike Iran, saying the US had been preparing to launch the "biggest attack since WWII" that would have been “disastrous for them”.
He said on Saturday night that he had “cancelled” the strikes after the "parameters" of a deal had been agreed to.
He said the deal on the Strait of Hormuz had been agreed after Iran requested it because "obviously they don't want to be attacked".
"We were also asked by Iran, very strongly actually, they said we want to make a deal now," he said.
