07/10/2025 (See translation in Arabic section) Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l: Cumberland City Council is proud to celebrate Australian Citizenship Day last month, with proudly welcoming 418 new citizens from over 50 different countries at its September Citizenship Ceremony on Monday 29 September 2025. At a time where belonging matters more than ever, Cumberland is becoming one of the most desirable places for new Australians to call home, as reflected in the growing number of people choosing to begin their journey in this dynamic and welcoming community. CUMBERLAND City is fast becoming one of the most desirable places for new Australians to call home, as reflected in the growing number of people choosing to begin their journey in this dynamic and welcoming community. On Monday 29 September 2025, Cumberland City Council proudly welcomed 418 new citizens from over 50 different countries, celebrating the strength and diversity that continues to define the local area. The latest ceremony follows the national celebration of Australian Citizenship Day on 17 September, a day which invites all Australians, by birth or by choice, to reflect on the meaning and value of citizenship. In 2025 so far, Cumberland City Council has welcomed more than 1,700 people, which have taken the pledge to become Australian citizens in Cumberland, across ten ceremonies held throughout the year. These ceremonies mark more than just a change in legal status, they represent a new chapter in a place that many now proudly call home. Cumberland’s appeal lies in its unique blend of lifestyle, location, and opportunity. The area’s diversity is reflected in its communities, with just over half of Cumberland’s residents born overseas and a quarter arriving in Australia within the last five years. For many, Cumberland is their first introduction to life in Australia, with approximately 150 different languages spoken across the Local Government Area, and 65.2 percent of residents speaking a language other than English at home. With its strategic location near key metropolitan centres, essential infrastructure, major employment hubs, and diverse cultural events, programs, and services, Cumberland offers an exceptional quality of life for residents, making it an ideal place for new citizens. The area is also home to exciting new developments in residential, commercial, and industrial sectors, creating a dynamic environment with a vibrant community life. This Cumberland community is supported by a local economy that provides more than 105,000 jobs across more than 27,600 businesses, with a welcoming atmosphere where diverse opportunities and cultures can thrive. Cumberland Mayor Ola Hamed stated that it is evident why people are choosing to start their Australian story in Cumberland, and believes the local area’s vibrant diversity and close-knit community makes it a standout place to live, work, and grow. “People are drawn to Cumberland not just because of its central location, but because it offers a true sense of community and belonging. It’s a place where cultures are celebrated, opportunities are shared, and people genuinely support one another,” said Mayor Hamed. “We are proud to support our newest citizens and are committed to ensuring they have the resources and opportunities to thrive. Cumberland is more than just a place, but a community where people from all walks of life come together, and that is why our local area holds such a special place in the hearts of all who call it home.” Cumberland City Council is proud to continue supporting its growing community by welcoming new citizens and recognising the unique contributions they bring to life in Cumberland and is dedicated to ensuring that everyone feels valued and supported as they settle into their new home.
