Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
The NSW Liberals and Nationals have welcomed the reduction of the weekly toll cap from $60 to $50, describing it as overdue cost-of-living relief for motorists, while arguing the measure falls short of the broader toll reform Labor promised before the last state election.
The change is expected to save eligible drivers up to $520 a year, offering some assistance to households that rely heavily on Sydney’s toll road network for work, school, appointments and daily travel.
The Coalition also welcomed the scrapping of toll administration fees, saying the move was part of a pre-election commitment that should have been delivered earlier.
NSW Opposition Leader Kellie Sloane said families across the state were facing rising costs and needed practical relief.
“Labor promised toll reform three years ago, yet drivers will still face toll price increases in a matter of days,” Ms Sloane said.
“Under Federal and NSW Labor, families and households are paying more for groceries, electricity, insurance, fuel and mortgages, and some cost-of-living relief is long overdue.”
Shadow Minister for Roads Mark Coure said toll relief was particularly important for motorists in Western Sydney, South-Western Sydney and Southern Sydney, where many families have little choice but to use toll roads.
“This change will provide welcome relief for families across West and South-Western Sydney as well as Southern Sydney, who rely on their cars every day to get to work, take their children to school, attend appointments and support local businesses,” Mr Coure said.
However, Mr Coure said the toll cap reduction should be viewed only as a first step.
“It is a step in the right direction, but drivers are still waiting for Labor to deliver the meaningful toll reform they promised before the last election,” he said.
The NSW Liberals and Nationals said they would continue to focus on practical measures aimed at easing cost-of-living pressure and putting money back into household budgets.
The Opposition said that while the reduction in the toll cap would help some drivers, broader reform was still needed to address the long-term burden of tolls on families and workers across Sydney.
