Oman commends Kuwait for hosting Yemeni talks

26/09/2016

NEW YORK-- Oman on Monday commended State of Kuwait for hosting the peace negotiations among the Yemeni parties, with an objective of achieving a win-win solution to the conflict.

"We laud the efforts exerted by His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to bridge the gap in the views of the Yemeni parties" who held UN-brokered talks in Kuwait between April and August this year, Minister responsible for Foreign Affairs Yusuf bin Alawi bin Abdullah said in a speech before the UN General Assembly's (UNGA) 71st session.

The aim of hosting the talks, he added, "has been to achieve a win-win solution to the conflict by peace negotiations." Representatives from the Yemeni legitimate government, Ansarullah Movement and the General People's Congress (CPG) held several rounds of talks in Kuwait, moderated and sponsored by UN special envoy to Yemen Ismail Ould Sheikh Ahmad.

Bin Abdullah emphasized that Oman strongly believed in the peaceful solution of conflicts. "Our country has been one of the states that adopted the policy of dialogue, negotiation and conciliation to settle disputes by peaceful means," he added.

Ansarullah committed a coup d'etat against the legitimate government of Yemeni President Abd Rabbu Mansour Hadi and as a result the country has plunged into a crisis.

The international community has been firm in calling on all parties in Yemen to solve their dispute on the basis of UN Security Council resolution 2216, GCC initiative and its implementation mechanism, and outcome of national dialogue.
