Lebanon’s Christian elites mobilise to support President Aoun

Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l:
Lebanon is at a pivotal juncture as Christian elites discreetly mobilise to embrace the opportunities presented by the new era under President Joseph Aoun. Away from the public eye, discussions are taking place among individuals with national aspirations and a collective vision. These elites, many of whom are consulting with their spiritual leaders, aim to lay the foundation for a movement that transcends partisan alignments and political disputes. Their goal is to support Aoun’s presidency and establish a dynamic force that revitalises Lebanon’s Christian community and contributes to national stability.
This initiative is not centred on personal or collective ambitions to hold political office, though such aspirations remain valid under Lebanon’s parliamentary democracy. Instead, it seeks to engage a younger generation frustrated by traditional political structures and disillusioned by the divisive tactics of many parties. For years, these tactics have preyed on the fears and concerns of young people, offering little in return for their loyalty and energy. At the same time, these individuals have found limited solace in the church, which, despite its historical importance and leadership during critical moments, has fallen short of expectations in the face of Lebanon’s ongoing financial and economic crises.
While the diaspora has supported their families and church institutions, their resources have been stretched thin. This has limited their ability to assist the church and broader national initiatives. Nonetheless, President Aoun’s presidency represents an opportunity to rejuvenate hope and optimism. The new era offers an opportunity for all Lebanese who need it, and Christians in this country are at the forefront of these efforts.
A growing number of veterans and youth with experience in governance, unions, and public administration are working to leverage Aoun’s leadership to inspire a national renaissance. They view his election as a constitutional milestone and a springboard for a comprehensive reconstruction effort. This effort seeks to root Lebanese citizens in their homeland, encourage youth to channel their talents toward national progress and utilise the country’s abundant human and natural resources. By doing so, Lebanon can reclaim its place on the global stage as a hub of innovation, investment, and culture.
However, the movement does not aim to create yet another political party or faction. Lebanon’s Christian community already suffers from an excess of competing movements that often prioritise internal rivalries over national unity. Instead, these elites aim to embrace Aoun’s presidency as a unifying symbol of national cohesion. Aoun has signalled his intent to uphold the unity of Lebanon’s land and people while resisting pressure to align his presidency with partisan interests. His role is to serve as a symbol of national unity, much as he did during his tenure as army commander.
The president’s oath speech reflects this vision, outlining a roadmap for national revival that deserves widespread support. These elites believe their efforts to support this vision can generate a ripple effect across Lebanese society. By creating a new engagement dynamic, they hope to rejuvenate not just the Christian community but the entire nation, fostering a sense of unity and shared purpose.
This movement is grounded in a set of core principles. First, it seeks to affirm the Christian role within Lebanon’s national framework, ensuring that Christians remain integral to the country’s identity and future. Second, it aims to strengthen the Christian presence in Lebanon, countering the forces that have led to emigration and community decline. Third, it emphasises the importance of national partnership, advocating for collaboration across sectarian and political divides.
The movement also reaffirms Lebanon’s position regarding Israel, which remains an enemy state due to its occupation of Lebanese territory, violations of sovereignty, and refusal to implement UN Security Council Resolution 194. The unresolved Palestinian refugee issue continues to destabilise Lebanon, just as it did during the lead-up to the civil war in 1975. Addressing this issue remains essential to Lebanon’s long-term stability and security.
This initiative draws inspiration from visionary leaders like Sheikh Maurice Gemayel, who emphasised the importance of imagination in governance. According to Gemayel, progress is impossible without the ability to envision a better future. The elites involved in this movement echo this sentiment, calling for an objective and honest assessment of Lebanon’s current challenges. They stress the need to move beyond partisan biases and focus on building a shared national vision.
Their approach is deliberate and cautious, recognising premature actions could jeopardise their efforts. By addressing longstanding issues and proposing innovative solutions, they aim to seize the rare opportunity presented by the current moment. Losing this chance could plunge Lebanon into greater uncertainty, whereas success could pave the way for a more unified and prosperous nation.
Christians play a crucial role in this effort, standing at the forefront of Lebanon’s revival. By embracing the potential of President Aoun’s leadership and working together, they can help ensure that this new era delivers meaningful change for all Lebanese citizens.
