Sydney-Middle East Times Int'l: Many in our community were shocked by the tragic stabbing incident in Merrylands on Tuesday. My thoughts are with the victims, their families and all those affected.
This has been incredibly distressing for everyone. The incident occurred outside local businesses I know well, and across the road from my office. My office was locked down when the crime scene was established.
The local business owners are hardworking, community-minded people, and this has understandably been frightening for them, their staff and customers.
I have been in contact with local police and understand that investigations are ongoing. I want to thank our emergency services for their swift response and professionalism.
This week, Premier Chris Minns joined me in Merrylands to meet with local small business owners following the incident.
This visit was an opportunity to hear directly from our community.
The NSW Government has announced an inquiry into how the alleged assailant absconded from psychiatric care.
This incident has also highlighted broader concerns about mental health support in our community. Merrylands, like many parts of Western Sydney, faces significant pressures when it comes to access to timely mental health care and crisis intervention.
When systems fail, the consequences can be devastating for families and for the wider community.
We must ensure that people experiencing acute mental health crises receive appropriate supervision, treatment and support - not only for their own wellbeing, but for community safety as well. Strengthening mental health services is essential. |
