AFIC Responds to Australian Parliament’s Vote on Palestinian Statehood Recognition
30/05/2024
(See translation in Arabic section)
Sydney - Middle East Times Int’l: The Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC) is disappointed with the vote in the Australian Parliament regarding allowing the House move to recognise the State of Palestine. This is a missed opportunity for the Government to cement its position domestically following the historic vote in the UN.
The Greens introduced and debated the motion to recognise a Palestinian state in the House. Unfortunately, it was voted down. Despite this setback, AFIC believes that recognising Palestinian statehood is not merely symbolic but a critical step toward peace and stability in the region.
Why Recognition Matters:
1. Concrete Step Toward Peace: Recognising the State of Palestine would have cemented Australia’s commitment to ending the cycle of violence and promoting dialogue.
2. Moral Responsibility: Australia has a moral responsibility to recognise the legitimate aspirations of the Palestinian people. All peoples should equally enjoy peace, security, and self-determination.
3. International Precedent: Other countries, including Norway, Spain, and Ireland, have recently recognised Palestine. By doing so, they acknowledge the rights and sovereignty of the Palestinian people.
Statements are insufficient; action is needed, and taking the opportunity as presented in the parliament is an opportunity lost. Recognising Palestine is a step toward justice and stability, underscoring the human right of self-determination.
‘We respect differing opinions and encourage unity within the broader community. Genuine efforts toward peace unite us’ said Dr Rateb Jneid, President of AFIC.
‘We echo the Assistant Foreign Minister Tim Watts’s suggestions that Palestinian statehood could form part of peace negotiations. Whilst we should all be prepared to work together to ensure a future where all can live in peace and security, the mass killing must be stopped now’ Concluded the President.
