Two dead, 12 injured after Sydney to Melbourne train derails

21/02/2020

(See Translation in Arabic section)

A train driver and co-driver have died overnight after a train travelling from Sydney to Melbourne came off the tracks.

The incident happened near Wallan, north of Melbourne, with 153 passengers on board.

At least 12 people were taken to hospital for treatment with authorities saying it was a miracle there weren't more deaths.

The train was 12 hours from Sydney when the track buckled, shifting four carriages at least 10 metres off their normal trajectory.

All passengers were extracted from the train, and emergency services established a crisis centre at a nearby service station.

The Transport Safety Bureau has established a crime scene.
