Potential Life Threatening Incident at Holland Park Mosque, Brisbane The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) is dismayed to report yet a further incident which occurred yesterday at Holland Park Mosque in Brisbane. In particular, yesterday afternoon, a man carrying a machete was witnessed walking towards a congregation of worshippers entering the mosque. A neighbour of the mosque alerted the group of congregants in a loud voice and they took refuge in the mosque and locked the doors. The man carrying the machete then left. The congregation has been left in a state of shock and fear. Holland Park Mosque has been the subject of a number of Islamophobic attacks since the Christchurch tragedy. This incident has occurred after an attack on a Synagogue in Germany by a white nationalist who murdered two people. These events highlight the very real risk and dangers posed by white extremist and nationalist ideology. There also appears to be a pattern developing of such persons attacking worshippers at places of worship. ANIC calls on the Government, political leaders, enforcement agencies and other community leaders to take more seriously the risks and dangers of white extremist and nationalist ideology and take all necessary steps to guard against the risks and dangers and ensure that all Australians are safe. |
