Finn condemns Hanson’s senate attack 16 September 2016 Last night in NSW Parliament, Member for Granville, Julia Finn slammed Senator Pauline Hanson’s intolerant and divisive inaugural speech in the Senate earlier this week. In her speech Hanson claimed “Now we are in danger of being swamped by Muslims” and “I call for stopping further Muslim immigration and banning the burqa.” In 1996 Hanson delivered a similar speech, saying "I believe we are in danger of being swamped by Asians." On 5 July Premier 2016 Premier Mike Baird told reporters “She has a right to make the comments she does”. More than half of the residents of Granville were born overseas in a non-English speaking country and three-quarters have at least one parent born overseas. Almost 10 per cent of the population are Hindus and almost 10 per cent are Muslims. Many of the Middle Eastern and Asian migrants are devout Christians too. Quotes attributable to the Member for Granville Julia Finn: “Twenty years ago Pauline Hanson claimed that we were in danger of being swamped by Asians and now she thinks we are in danger of being swamped by Muslims. “She is as wrong now as she was then. “I condemn Pauline Hanson’s views. “As Premier of NSW Mike Baird has a responsibility to stand up for everybody across the State. I call on him also to reject Pauline Hanson’s narrow-minded views. “I am proud to represent one of the most culturally diverse electorates in NSW Parliament. It is a great place and I love it.” |
