Shell Oman and Sultan Qaboos University ink agreement

22nd, July 2015

MUSCAT: As part of the continuous collaboration between Shell and Sultan Qaboos University in the field of research and the development of Omani talents, Sultan Qaboos University (SQU) and Shell have signed a letter of agreement enabling students from Sultan Qaboos University’s College of Engineering to participate in the Shell Eco-marathon Asia in 2016.

Dr Ali bin Saud al Bemani, Vice- Chancellor of SQU, signed the agreement with Chris Breeze, Shell’s Country Chairman in Oman and Adil bin Ismail al Raisi, Shell Oman Marketing Company’s Managing Director at Sultan Qaboos University.

Students from the Department of Mechanical and Industrial Engineering of the College of Engineering at SQU participated in the 2015 competition that was held in Manila, the Philippine for the first time with a prototype fuel efficient vehicle.

Based on the new agreements, SQU’s team will participate again in the Shell Eco-marathon competition scheduled to take place in the Philippines, in early 2016.

This agreement follows a series of cooperative projects in the research field between Sultan Qaboos University and Shell.

Under Shell Eco-marathon competition, students can either design a prototype vehicle,

which focuses on maximum efficiency, or an urban concept vehicle, which encourages more practical designs for every-day life.

Throughout the history of the competition, the most fuel efficient car ever designed by a Shell Eco-marathon student team capable of driving 3,771 km on a litre of fuel — the equivalent of driving from Muscat to Ankara – was achieved in 2009 in Europe.

Al Bemani said “We are very pleased with the agreement signed with Shell. We at Sultan Qaboos University are very keen in offering our students who are interested in technology and energy a unique and hands-on experience opportunity to stretch the boundaries of fuel efficiency in the real world, all in the spirit of teamwork, competition and innovation.

“We were incredibly impressed by the amount of enthusiasm we saw from the students that participated in Shell Eco-marathon from SQU last year and we are very pleased to see that Sultan Qaboos University look set to compete in Shell Eco-marathon for the second time. I believe the Shell Eco-marathon will help develop students’ talents and make a contribution to sustainability in Oman.

The Shell Eco-marathon challenge provides a great opportunity for students to develop their business, team work and engineering skills while also raising their awareness towards important energy and environment challenges,” commented Chris Breeze, Shell’s Country Chairman in Oman. Al Raisi, Managing Director of Shell Oman Marketing Company, said, “Our commitment to corporate social responsibility and years of research and development contributed to our ability to provide the customers in Oman with cutting edge fuel technology and lubricants that are cleaner and more efficient, and in the same time share benefits with the community.

Shell Eco-marathon does not only help young engineers in Oman turn their best ideas into reality,

but it’s also designed to grow innovative minds and build a strong workforce for Oman as young engineers come together to effectively communicate, exchange knowledge,

and combine disciplines to drive innovative minds towards achieving their goals.”

Bader al Maamari, a student from SQU who participated in Shell Eco-marathon Asia in February this year, said, “I’m very proud of the experience I had at the Shell Eco-marathon competition. I have gained a lot from being amongst hundreds of students from across the world learning together and competing for the title of the most fuel efficient vehicle. I wish all the best for the 2016 contestants and I hope they take full advantage of all the Shell Eco-marathon experience has to offer.”
