OMAN: Symposium on cultural heritage begins

MUSCAT — A three-day regional symposium on identifying the legal concepts for the preservation of the intangible cultural Heritage, organised by the Ministry of Heritage and Culture, started in Muscat yesterday, under the auspices of Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shaibaniyah, Minister of Education.

The opening ceremony was attended by His Highness Sayyid Haitham bin Tareq al Said, Minister of Heritage and Culture and a number of their highnesses and excellences. Dr Madeeha bint Ahmed al Shibaniyah, Minister of Education, pointed out that the Sultanate is one of the leading countries that ratified the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and one of the leading countries that recorded its sites at the world heritage lists. The symposium discusses a number of themes including developing a standard law for the intangible cultural heritage in the Arab countries, the role of civil society organisations in preserving the intangible cultural heritage and slandering the Arab concepts and terminologies in light of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage. The Symposium aims at developing a guideline intangible cultural heritage law in the Arab countries.

Hayat Qatat al- Qurmazi, Director of Culture Administration and the Heritage Protection Program at the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science delivered the speech of the organisation where she said that the Organisation strives to enhance the status of heritage and help it take its due status.

Sayyid Said bin Sultan al Busaidy, Director of Traditional Arts at the Ministry of Heritage and Culture and chairman of the organising committee, delivered a speech where he pointed out that the symposiums complements the workshops that were held in Qatar and Kuwait in collaboration with the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science in a bid to develop an integrated frameworks for the preservation of the intangible cultural heritage.

Mohammed Sulyem al Yaqoubi, Secretary-General of the National Commission for Education, Culture and Science, delivered a speech where he pointed out that the symposium is one of a series of programmes implemented by the Arab Organization for Education, Culture and Science in a bid to highlight the Arab true heritage, the importance of preserving it and the need to build capacities of workers at the sectors.
