Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Social Services, Senator Concetta Fierravanti-Wells, last night joined celebrations of the Feast Day of Saint Maroun at Saint Maroun’s Cathedral in Redfern, Sydney.

“This was another occasion that I have enjoyed celebrations with the Maronite Community in Australia. It was a particular pleasure to attend in my official capacity as the Parliamentary Secretary with special responsibility for Multicultural Affairs along with my colleagues, the Minister for Social Services, Kevin Andrews MP and newly elected Liberal Member for Reid, Craig Laundy MP as well as Premier Barry O’Farrell and many of his parliamentary colleagues,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said.

“This celebration is of special significance for the Maronite community in Australia and most especially as His Excellency Bishop Tarabay delivered his first liturgy for the Feast Day since his appointment by the Holy Father, Pope Francis as Bishop of the Maronite Diocese in Australia.

”The Feast Day provides an opportunity to acknowledge the Patron Saint of the Maronite Church, Saint Maroun, who was born in the fourth century. He became a hermit near Antioch and lived a contemplative monastic life and attracted many followers in Syria and Lebanon.

“The Feast of Saint Maroun is also an apt time to acknowledge the richness that multiculturalism brings to our country.

“The Maronite community's achievements have been made possible by the determination and dedication of many outstanding individuals and by the spirit of a faith-inspired community.

“As Australians we are rightly proud of our cultural, linguistic and religious diversity and this community continues to play a consistent and effective part in our nation's success and strength.

“I trust all members of Australia’s Maronite Catholic community enjoyed a happy Feast of Saint Maroun,” Senator Fierravanti-Wells said.
