Under the name Masabeeh Ramadaniya (Arabic for Ramadan lanterns), the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre in Abu Dhabi, will host a number of prominent Quran reciters, renown in the Arab and Muslim world, to lead the Taraweeh (extra collective night prayers in Ramadan) and Tahujjud (night prayer) prayers throughout the days of the Holy Month of Ramadan.

The Taraweeh prayer schedule includes Sheikh Fares Abbad from first to the tenth of Ramadan, Sheikh Mishary Alafasi from eleven to fifteen Ramadan, Sheikh Idris from sixteen to nineteenth of Ramadan and Sheikh Abdul Alwali Alerkane from the twentieth to the end of Ramadan. The Tahujjud prayers will be led by Sheikh Idris from twentieth Ramadan to end month of Ramadan.

There will also be a program of nightly religious lectures held at the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque which are offered by selected Islamic scholars from all over the world. These will happen after the Taraweeh prayers.

These initiatives fall within the SZGMC's strategy to offer programs befitting the importance of the Holy Month. The programs are designed to meet the needs of Ramadan fasters as well as to provide an encouraging Taraweeh and Tahujjud prayer program for community members to perform their prayers in a deep sense of tranquility, serenity and meditation which is important in the practice of worship.

The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, the country's largest mosque, is undergoing final preparations to conduct the annual Iftar program which has been offered by the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque since the passing of the UAE's founding father Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan (God rest his soul in peace), in 2004, and is done for the rest of his soul.

The Armed Forces Officers Club in Abu Dhabi prepares and delivers around 20-25 thousand nutritious Iftar meal packages daily to the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque. A team of volunteers and staff organise, distribute and supervise the meal distribution into the Ramadan tents which are situated in the lower gardens of the mosque.

In order to professionally manage such a large daily operation, the SZGMC cooperates with several entities. The traffic, health and safety, transportation and waste management are all key elements to the program's success. Under the management of the SZGMC, a committee of members from Ministry of the Interior, Department of Civil Defence, Abu Dhabi Police, Department of Transport, Red Crescent Authority, Directorate of Moral Guidance Command of the Armed Forces, Waste Management and Special Task Department Abu Dhabi. The aim of this collaboration is to ensure the comfort, health and safety of all worshippers. Some of these services include outdoor cooling units, traffic flow regulation for the surrounding road systems, preparation of emergency risk assessments and plans, providing special needs services and general security to maintain order in the flow of people.

The SZGMC has also coordinated with the Department of Transport to facilitate the transfer of fasters from various areas of Abu Dhabi to the mosque to participate in the Iftar meal on a daily basis.

On the occasion of the holy month, Yousif Al Obaidli, Director General of the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre extended his deepest congratulations and blessings, in the name of the Centre, to the country's leadership and to the people of the United Arab Emirates, praying to God Almighty to bestow the Arab and Islamic nations with blessings for the Holy Month of Ramadan.

During the Holy Month of Ramadan, tours are offered daily by the Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque Centre, at 10am and 11am, except Fridays. Led by one of our National Tourist guides, the interactive tours provide information about the mosque, its architecture and there is plenty of opportunity for visitors to ask questions. The Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque was recently named one of the top twenty-five landmarks in the world by Tripadvisor, confirming its place as one of the most important cultural tourism destinations in the country and region. Ramadan is a special time of the year and visitors are encouraged to take a guided tour and experience the Islamic culture of the mosque.

The SZGMC, under the Ministry of Presidential Affairs, is sponsored and monitored by H.H Sheikh Mansour Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, and was established to be the centre of the cultural and intellectual movement focused around the Mosque. Its vision and mission was created from the cultural and national values preserved and nurtured by the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan (God rest his soul). These cultural values are still deeply-rooted in the consciousness of the people and are an extension of the national identity inspired by the teachings of the Nation's religion.
