UAE continues its efforts to empower women's representation in all fields

New York The United Arab Emirates has pledged to continue its efforts aimed at empowering women's positions in all fields, both nationally and internationally.

Dr. Moza Al-Shehhi, representative of the General Women's Union (GWU), in a statement made at the Annual Session of the Executive Board of the United Nations Entity for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women (UN Women), which concluded last night, stressed that the UAE welcomes the draft updated Strategic Plan which has been approved by the board for the period 2014 - 2017.

She stressed that the UAE has made great achievements thanks to the directives of Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, in the field of women's empowerment in all fields, citing the appointment of four women ministers in the cabinet along with an increase of women's representation in the Federal National Council by 18 per cent. She also drew attention to the appointment of Emirati women in the Diplomatic Corps and the judiciary.

Dr. Moza noted that the UAE government recently completed the necessary efforts to achieve women's participation in decision-making positions as per the decision issued by the Cabinet stipulating the promotion of women's participation in the boards of government bodies and companies.

UAE's officials also emphasised that the UAE government is currently implementing the final stages of renovation of the final national strategy for advancement of women in the UAE for the period 2013 - 2017.

Gargash hails FNC efforts

Dr Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Minister of Federal National Council (FNC) Affairs, has hailed the significant development of the work of FNC and said it reflects the political empowerment programme which was launched by President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan.

This also embodies the mature parliamentary experience in the UAE, Gargash added in statements at the conclusion of the sessions of FNC's second ordinary term.

The minister expressed appreciation of the efforts made by the speaker, secretary general and members of the Federal National Council to implement rapprochement between the Council and the government towards the best implementation of recommendations by the Council.

He noted that FNC members were committed to attending all sessions in response to directives by Vice President and Prime Minister and Ruler of Dubai, His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, for continuous coordination and interaction with members as well as responding to all the questions they raised during the session.

Gargash hailed the outstanding relationship between FNC and the government and noted it was demonstrated through dialogue and discussions during the session.

He also hailed the support provided by the Government to the council as instrumental in helping the body enhance its legislative and regulatory framework.
