The Coalition urges Dubai authorities for Matthew Joyce and Marcus Lee

Media release from Julie Bishop the Deputy Leader of the Opposition

The Coalition urges Dubai authorities for Matthew Joyce and Marcus Lee

The Coalition is concerned at the severity of the penalty imposed on Matthew Joyce in Dubai.

Mr Joyce has maintained he is innocent of the charges against him which relate to a disputed property transaction.

He has indicated that he will appeal the sentence of 10 years in jail and a fine of $25 million.

The Coalition respectfully urges the Dubai authorities to allow this appeal and to consider the full range of evidence available in this matter.

This is a difficult and distressing time for Mr Joyce, his family and friends and the Coalition extends its support.

We also urge the Australian government to continue to make representations to the Dubai authorities and to continue the consular support extended to Mr Joyce and his family.

This tragic case is a reminder that when Australians become subject to the justice systems of other countries there can be strict limits to the influence of the Australian government.

The Coalition welcomes the acquittal of Marcus Lee who is now free to return to Australia.
