Gargash heads UAE delegation to first meeting of Mali Contact Group

Dr. Anwar bin Mohammed Gargash, Minister of State for Foreign Affairs headed the UAE delegation in the first ministerial meeting of the Mali Contact Group in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The meeting was held at the invitation of General Secretary of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), Akmaluddin Ihsan Oghlo.

The ministerial team was set up after a resolution was passed at the Islamic Summit held in Cairo last February, to follow up on the situation in Mali and coordinate efforts of the OIC to support the country.

Garagsh said that the UAE was closely following up the developments in the Republic of Mali and continuing the consultations with the neighbouring countries about the situation in Mali. He added that the UAE participates in all efforts to support Mali and help its people to overcome the crisis, as well as help the national unity government restore stability to the country through political process.

“We are looking forward to the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), through the Mali Contact Group, to play pivotal role in the regional and international efforts to assist Mali restore sovereignty, national unity, help it to fight terrorism and cross border crime”, he added.

The UAE minister underlined the need for supporting the transitional government in Mali to commence the collective political process that ensures national unity, political stability and participation of all components of Mali people .

He added the OIC and member states should play an active role to assist Mali, besides the efforts being exerted by African Union and The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and support the joint taskforce on Mali in Addis Ababa.
