OMAN: Adding Third Lane to Bidbid Sur Dualization Road

Adding Third Lane to Bidbid Sur Dualization Road

Bidbid, Feb 12 --- Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed al-Futaisi, Minister of Transport and Communications said that the Ministry has decided to add a third lane to Bidbid /Sur dualization project taking into consideration the future vision for this vital road and in response to the constant growth of traffic, economic, trade, tourism, population and construction growth in the North and South A'Sharqiyah Governorates.

In a statement to Oman News Agency (ONA) during a field visit to the project, he added ' due to the tough terrain and nature of the area at which the Bidbid/Sur passes, it was necessary to add a third lane at the time the contractor is completing the cutting and construction works at the tough mountains series which the road penetrates.

The Transport and Communications Minister pointed out that in a bid by the Ministry to alleviate the traffic congestion at Al Sahwa Tower / Bidbid road, a specialized consultant has been mandated with conducting a study on the possible alternatives that can alleviate the traffic congestion and add a third lane.

It is worth mentioning that the Ministry is currently implementing the first stage of the road dualization project starting from Bidbid crossroad on the Al Rusayl/Nizwa road in the wilayats of Sumail, Al Mudhaibi, Dema Wal Tayyin till Masroon roundabout in the wilayat of Ibra (about 115 km). The project includes a number of flyovers and multi-level cross roads that serve the wilayats at which the road passes.

The second stage is in the tendering process among the competing companies. He hoped that the contract for the second stage would be awarded soon by the Tender Board.

Bidbid/Sur road is one of the vital roads as it connects Muscat Governorate to the A'Sharqiyah Governorate through A'Dakhiliyah Governorate. It leads to the Al Wusta Governorate and then to the Dhofar Governorate.

The road will also serve a large number of wilayats on the road sides.

Adding the third lane will facilitate movement of goods and vehicles. During the field visit, he met with a number of citizens from the wilayats at which the road crosses and listened to their views and input regarding the implementation of the project.

Dr. Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Salim al-Futaisi, the Transport and Communications Minister was accompanied by Sheikh Dr. Khalifa bin Hamad al-Sa'adi, A'Dakhiliyah Governor, Eng. Salim bin Mohammed al-Nuaimi, Undersecretary of the Ministry of Transport and Communications and a number of officials at the Ministry.
