Kuwait to name major road in honor of late Saudi King – Ministers vow to stamp out corruption

KUWAIT: Kuwait will name a major road after the late Saudi King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz due to his place in the hearts of the Kuwaiti people and his huge contributions to his nation, the Cabinet agreed on Monday. The Municipality has been tasked with the decision, taken under the directions of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, said State Minister for Cabinet Affairs Sheikh Abdullah Al- Mubarak Al-Sabah after a Cabinet session. It comes in “appreciation of the esteemed place the late King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al- Saud holds in the hearts of all Kuwaitis, his huge contributions, sacrifices and accomplishments for his nation and people and courageous stances over various fronts,” the Cabinet statement added after the session held at Sief Palace, chaired by His Highness the Prime Minister Sheikh Jaber Mubarak Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. The statement went on to wish all the best to his newly-enthroned successor King Salman bin Abdulaziz in continuing the development of Saudi Arabia and in serving Arab and Islamic causes.

Tackling corruption Furthermore, ministers were briefed on steps being taken to tackle corruption by representatives of the recently-formed public anti-corruption authority, headed by Justice Abdulrahman Al-Nemash. The body outlined its recent efforts and the legal approach being assumed to tackle offenders employed by state institutions based on the principles of transparency and integrity and the directions of His Highness the Amir. In turn, the ministers commended the body’s role as “positive” and urged that it may be given all the support needed for it to carry out its role in a manner enabling it to achieve the nation’s aspired goals of stamping out corruption and climbing up global transparency indexes. For his part, His Highness the Prime Minister encouraged the use of the strictest forms of accountability on offenders - either state employees or foreign contracted parties - and for efforts to be doubled in order to stop what he called a “destructive plague,” and its impacts on the community.

GCC ministerial meeting Ministers were also briefed on the recent Riyadh-held Gulf Cooperation Council urgent ministerial meeting on the situation in Yemen by First Deputy Premier and Foreign Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled Al-Hamad Al-Sabah. They urged the importance of Security Council resolutions on the matter to be applied, and for necessary procedures to be taken in the best interests and for the stability of the southwestern nation in the Arabian Peninsula. Sheikh Sabah Al- Khaled also mentioned the outcomes of his attendance of the meeting of the international coalition against the Islamic State (ISIL) held in London, aimed at discussing the coalition’s coordination on facing terrorism and supporting international efforts for global security and stability. He also outlined the details of his recent trip to Malta where he met Foreign Minister George Vella, with discussions on both sides focusing on means to further already existing bilateral relations and matters of mutual interest.

Draft law Afterwards, Minister of Finance Anas Al-Saleh and his undersecretary Khalifa Hamada both gave a briefing on a draft law for the 2015/16 budget of ministries and public bodies, which received a nod from the Cabinet, and will be later referred to the parliament. The draft law highlights oil and non-oil revenue estimates and expenditure related to public wages, incentives, subsidies and investments - including the state development plan.

The ministers went on to witness a number of letters sent to His Highness the Amir and His Highness the Prime Minister. A letter to His Highness the Amir from International Olympic Committee chief Thomas Bach was to show the adoption of the 2020 Olympic Agenda, and to invite His Highness the Amir to visit the IOC Headquarters and its new museum in Lausanne, Switzerland. Another two letters to His Highness the Prime Minister from the President of Ghana John Dramani Mahama and the Foreign Minister of Canada John Baird were related to bilateral relations. Furthermore, ministers approved a draft decree to appoint Maj Khaled Al-Kharafi as Deputy Secretary General of the Kuwait Awqaf Public Foundation, Ali Al-Salman as Assistant Undersecretary in the Ministry of Justice and Abdullah Al-Maqseed as a board member of the Public Authority for Youth and Sports.
