Arab lawmakers to focus on "true Islam" at OIC parliamentary talks - Al-Ghanim

KUWAIT--Kuwait's National Assembly speaker said Arab lawmakers attending Organization of Islamic Cooperation Parliamentary Union (PUIC) talks have agreed to focus on the issue of French satirical magazine, Charlie Hebdo's "insults" to the Prophet Mohammad.

They also intend to send a "civilized message" to the world clarifying the "true Islam," Marzouq Al-Ghanim told KUNA, after attending side talks with Arab counterparts.

Arab lawmakers have also agreed to adopt a proposal set forth by the United Arab Emirates' parliament on terrorism, he said, without elaborating any further on its contents.

He went on to commend the consensus reached between the lawmakers on the decision.

In a coordinative meeting, members of the PUIC opted for Saudi Arabia, Lebanon, Algeria and Morocco to occupy its executive committee, with the UAE, Palestine, Sudan and Mauritania occupying its political and foreign relations committee.

Bahrain, Iraq, Somalia and Algeria were selected for the economic and environmental affairs committee, while Kuwait, Jordan, Sudan and Mauritania will assume responsibilities in the human, women and family rights committee.

Oman, Yemen, Somalia and Mauritania were selected to represent the cultural affairs and cultural dialogue committee, while Kuwait and Qatar will be involved in the specialized committee on Palestine.
