MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER EID AL-ADHA 1October 2014 (Translation of this article appears in Arabic section) I am pleased to send this message to the Muslim community in Australia and around the world on the occasion of Eid al-Adha. The story of Abraham is shared by three of the world’s great faiths: Islam, Christianity and Judaism. Eid al-Adha is an occasion to reflect on the faith and devotion of Abraham. His strong values are universal. In homes and mosques around the country, people will come together with family and friends to commemorate Eid al-Adha. It is an opportunity to honour faith and to cherish the freedom to practice one’s faith. Religious freedom has always been a settled part of the Australian tradition. Different religious communities should respect each other. People of different faiths – and none – should respect each other. Muslim Australians are an important part of Team Australia. Together, we will continue to strengthen our future as a free, fair and multicultural society; and a beacon of hope and optimism for people from right around the world. I send you my best wishes for an enjoyable and peaceful celebration. The Hon Tony Abbott MP Prime Minister of Australia |
