UN hails Oman’s support for refugees

27th, August 2014

MUSCAT — The Sultanate of Oman’s role in humanitarian aid to various countries in the region and elsewhere have been appreciated by the UNFPA Oman Representative who called the efforts “of great significance and it alleviate the pains of Arabs in the region and help bringing back regional stability.

“The efforts of Oman in alleviating pain of those suffering in Gaza, Syria and Iraq are highly laudable as they are crucial in rehabilitating and reinstating lives there. They rank high in global humanitarian efforts”, Asr Ahmed Toson, Representative, UNFPA- Sub regional Office for the GCC states, told the Observer.

Speaking on the sidelines of the announcement of preparations for the 29th UN General Assembly special session (UNGASS) on the follow up to the International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD) Beyond 2014 on September 22 in New York, Toson said that Oman will be a crucial partner in the conference.

“The Government of Oman has been invited to the session and we are awaiting a positive feedback from them. Certainly, the country is a very important partner in this global conference”.

The special session aims mainly at assessing the status of implementation of the ICPD Programme of Action; and to recommit governments at the highest political level and renew political support for actions required for the full achievement of the goals and objectives of the Programme of Action.

The UNFPA, in cooperation with other organisations of the UN system and other relevant international organisations, as well as institutions and experts, seeks to undertake an operational review of the implementation of the Programme of Action on the basis of the highest-quality data and analysis of the state of population and development, taking into account the need for a systematic, comprehensive and integrated approach to population and development issues and the need to respond to new challenges.

“It also provides a defining opportunity for member states at the highest political level to take note of the reports of the review, including the Secretary-General’s Index Report that will contain the key issues identified by Member States in the 47th session of the Commission on Population and Development as crucial for further implementation of the Programme of Action (POA), thereby endorsing the contents”.
