Celebrations begin across the UAE as the winner of the Expo 2020 bid was announced in Paris, thousands witness fireworks at Burj Khalifa.

Dubai’s bid to host the World Expo in 2020 has been successful, it was announced this evening.

With this, Dubai will become the first city in the Middle East to host the global event. Dubai had in its proposal offered to hold the event form October 20, 2020 to April 10, 2021.

The announcement was made in Paris at the General Assembly of the Bureau International des Expositions (BIE), the organization responsible for overseeing and regulating the bidding and the selection of the host city. Dubai -- with the theme ‘Connecting Minds, Creating The Future’, which focuses on infrastructure, sustainability and economic opportunities -- beat Izmir (Turkey), Ekaterinburg (Russia), and Sao Paulo (Brazil). The candidate city was decided by a voting procedure that comprised three secret ballots for which 167 member nations cast their votes.

President says joy in the UAE was double by the win as it coincides with the celebrations of the 42nd National Day.

The President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, in a telephone conversation, has congratulated His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, on Dubai’s winning the bid to host Expo 2020.

Shaikh Khalifa affirmed that “our joy in the UAE was double by the win as it coincides with the celebrations of the 42nd National Day.”

He noted that this success was the culmination of a series of successes and great achievements the UAE has been incessantly making since its establishment 42 years ago to remain in the lead in all fields.

The President said: “From day one when we submitted our bid to host Expo 2020, we were fully confident that Dubai deserves to win the bid, and that our country possesses all it takes to successfully organise a unique event that will add a new and outstanding imprint on the Expo series of events.”

Dubai Expo 2020 will breathe new life into the ancient role of the Middle East as a melting pot for cultures and creativity, says the Vice-President.

His Highness Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, dedicated the Expo 2020 bid win to the President, His Highness Shaikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Their Highnesses Members of the Supreme Council and Rulers of the Emirates and to the people of the UAE.

Shaikh Mohammed said: “We congratulate the nation, our president and all people in the UAE on Dubai’s winning bid to host the greatest exhibition in the world. I extend my thanks to His Highness Shaikh Khalifa for his great support, and to every country that voted for Dubai to host Expo 2020. I am proud of our teams who earned this victory for Dubai with two years of hard work, dedication and commitment.
