KUWAIT- Kuwait's National Assembly Speaker Ali Al-Rashid congratulated the newly-elected Pope Francis I on Friday, noting that the election of a South American pontiff was a "favourable step".

The Kuwaiti chief lawmaker called on the Pope to "continue the legacy of his predecessors in encouraging the principles of peace and justice around the world, particularly in relation to the Arab-Israeli conflict." "The oppression has become evident to all, and the international community has turned a blind eye to Israel's daily crimes against the Palestinian people, " he added.

Al-Rashid urged the new pope to "promote dialogue amongst faiths, built upon tolerance and 'acceptance of the other'", adding "these are the principles that our moderate Islamic faith and other religions promote".
