British PM Cameron Receives Prince Alwaleed at 10 Downing Street
HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) visited 10 Downing Street in Westminster, London and was received by British Prime Minister David Cameron. The meeting was also attended by Lord Green, Minister of State for Trade & Investment. Prince Alwaleed was accompanied by Mr. Shadi Sanbar, KHC’s Executive Director, CFO and Member of the Investment Committee, Dr. Nahla Alanbar, Private Executive Assistant to HRH the Chairman, Ms. Hassna Alturki, Department Head Travel & External Affairs and Dr. Khaled Almansour, Advisor to HRH the Chairman.
The meeting began as Prince Alwaleed thanked the Prime Minister for his hospitality and warm welcome. Prince Alwaleed and Prime Minister discussed the importance of the long established Saudi-British relations and the efforts made by both countries to maintain it. The two also discussed a number of general local, regional issues and the current global economic climate. Also, during the meeting Prime Minister Cameron and Prince Alwaleed discussed the Prince’s investments through KHC in the United Kingdom.
Prince Alwaleed has a long established relationship with the UK through his investments via KHC and through Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation.
Prince Alwaleed’s investments through KHC in the United Kingdom include The Savoy hotel one of KHC’s major investments in the United Kingdom, Canary Warf in the real estate sector and Citigroup in the financial sector. In addition, other investments include a 47.5% interest in the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts co-owned by the billionaire Bill Gates, which manages 3 hotels; London at Park Lane, London at Canary Wharf and the third in Hampshire.
In 2012, Prince Alwaleed received The Rt Hon. Lord Mayor of the City of London, Alderman David Wootton at his office in Riyadh and an accompanying delegation. The two also discussed a number of general local, regional issues and the current global economic climate. Furthermore, during the discussions the Prince referred to Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation that he chairs referring to the various donations made by the Foundation to university centers to promote cultural dialogue and build a bridge between East-West for tolerance, and understanding stressing the importance of this initiative.
In December 2011, HH Princess Ameerah Al–Taweel, Vice Chairwoman of Alwaleed Bin Talal Foundation, attended the Turquoise Mountain Fundraising Dinner on behalf of Alwaleed Foundation. The event was held at Clarence House and hosted by HRH Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales. During the event, the Turquoise Mountain Foundation, Afghanistan, displayed handcrafted objects created by trainees at the Institute for Afghan Arts and Architecture. Moreover, Princess Ameerah announced a donation of £1 million, through the Alwaleed Foundation, to Turquoise Mountain towards an endowment that will sustain Turquoise Mountain Foundation over 15 years. In recognition to this and previous support, a building will be named after “HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud”. The institute sits in the heart of the Old City. It is made up of buildings with nearly 200 years of history, and which represents the history and culture of Afghanistan.
On April 29th 2011, Prince Alwaleed and Princess Ameerah attended the Royal wedding of HRH Prince William and Ms. Kate Middleton by invitation from Her Majesty the Queen.
In 2011, Princess Ameerah and HRH Prince Philip Duke of Edinburgh who is Chancellor of the University of Cambridge and the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Sir Leszek Borysiewicz, formally opened the HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre of Islamic Studies at the University of Cambridge. During the opening ceremony the Chancellor Prince Philip presented Her Highness with an 800th Anniversary Medal for Outstanding Philanthropy that she accepted on behalf of Prince Alwaleed.
In 2010, HRH Prince Charles, The Prince of Wales, HRH Prince Alwaleed Princess Ameerah inaugurated The Savoy hotel one of KHC’s major investments in the United Kingdom. In June 2010, Prince Alwaleed and Princess Ameerah, were received by Prince Charles, at Clarence House during their visit to the UK.
Also in 2010, Prince Alwaleed was awarded an Honorary Degree of Doctor honoris causa from the University of Edinburgh in a ceremony at the Signet Library, Parliament Square, and also inaugurated the Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Centre for the Study of Islam at Edinburgh University. The degree was conferred by HRH Prince Philip. The Duke of Edinburgh is Chancellor of the University of Edinburgh and the University of Cambridge.
In 2008, HRH made a £16 million endowment to create two new research centres for Islamic studies at the University of Cambridge and the University of Edinburgh (£8 million for each university). The new centers carry out both research and public engagement designed to enhance understanding between the Muslim world and the West. In 2002, the Prince made a £1 million endowment to the Institute of Arab and Islamic Studies at the University of Exeter.
His Highness had received the Duke of York in 2007 and 2009. Moreover, Prince Alwaleed had received the Prince of Wales at Kingdom Resort in Riyadh in 2006 and the Prince visited Highgrove in 2005. Newscorp owns 19% stake in Rotana
HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) and Rotana Group, met with Mr. James Murdoch, Deputy Chief Operating Officer, Chairman and CEO, News Corporation International at The Savoy Hotel, during His Highness’s visit to London, UK. The meeting was also attended by Mr. Fahad Alsukait, CEO- Rotana Group and CEO of Alarab Channel that is owned by Prince Alwaleed, and Dr. Nahla Nasser Alanbar, Private Executive Assistant to HRH the Chairman and from News Corporation Mr. Gary Davy.
Prince Alwaleed and Mr. James Murdoch discussed various issues related to Rotana, Newscorp and Kingdom Holding Company. Also during the meeting Prince Alwaleed and Mr. Murdoch discussed their strategic alliance and reaffirmed their support for Rotana. Prince Alwaleed has 7% (voting shares) through KHC in News Corp. and KHC that is 95% owned by Prince Alwaleed, is the second largest shareholder in News Corp after the Murdoch family. Moreover, Newscorp owns 19% stake in Rotana.

In the same year, Prince Alwaleed met with Mr. Rupert Murdoch, Chairman, and CEO of News Corporation (News Corp.) at Newscorp’s headquarters in New York. Furthermore, Rotana board members met with Mr. James Murdoch at The Plaza Hotel in New York.
In 2010, Prince Alwaleed met with Mr. Rupert Murdoch at the company’s headquarters in New York. In 2009, Rotana and Fox International Channels (FIC), the international television channels arm of Rupert Murdoch’s News Corporation announced that viewers in the Middle East and North Africa region will have access to more of the world’s best family entertainment after signing a multi-year output deal with The Walt Disney Company – Europe, Middle East and Africa. This collaboration provided a compelling proposition to Rotana’s bouquet of offerings to viewers and the trade community across the Middle East region
In 2008, Prince Alwaleed and Mr. Rupert Murdoch formed an alliance in the presence of Mr. James Murdoch to bring Fox Movies to the Arab World through a partnership between Rotana and News Corporation. Furthermore in 2008, Mr. James Murdoch visited Riyadh to meet with Prince Alwaleed. During his trip, Mr. James Murdoch visited Rotana offices, various KHC local projects, and the Saudi Research and Marketing Group (SRMG). KHC acquired 29.9% share of SRMG. The publications that fall under SRMG include Asharq Al Awsat, Al Eqtisadiah, Arab News, Hia magazine, Al Majalla magazine, Arrajol magazine and Sayidati magazine. In addition, other entities that fall under SRMG are Al Khaleejiya for Publicity Advertising and Public Relations and Al Madina Printing and Publishing Company. Also during Mr. Murdoch’s visit, Prince Alwaleed hosted a luncheon in his honor at HRH’s Kingdom Resort, and on the following day Prince Alwaleed hosted a dinner in honor of his guest at the desert camp. Moreover, in the same year Prince Alwaleed was received by Mr. Rupert Murdoch at News Corporation company’s headquarters in New York during a business luncheon. In 2005, HRH announced his support for Murdoch by converting KHC’s non-voting shares to voting shares.
Prince Alwaleed & Google’s Schmidt Hold Working Lunch at The Savoy, London
HRH Prince Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud, Chairman of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC) met with Mr. Eric Schmidt Executive Chairman of Google at The Savoy hotel, London. Also, Prince Alwaleed and Google’s Schmidt held a lunch meeting in the presence of, HRH Prince Khalid Bin Alwaleed Bin Talal Bin Abdulaziz Alsaud and Mr. Shadi Sanbar, KHC’s Executive Director and CFO and Member of the Investment Committee.
During their meeting HRH and Mr. Schmidt discussed business and economic issues. The two also discussed Prince Alwaleed’s investments in the US in light of being the largest individual foreign investor there. Also, on the agenda of discussions was future potential business cooperation between KHC and Google in the technology field.
HRH has significant investments in the US in the financial sector via Citigroup, in the media and entertainment sector through News Corporation, Time Warner and in the hotel sector through the Fairmont New York Plaza one of New York’s most distinctive landmarks, Four Seasons hotel via the management of Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts in which KHC hold a 47.5% interest, and in the Social Media and Technology sector via Twitter.
His Highness first invested in Citigroup in 1991, and is the largest single shareholder in the company. In January 2008, Prince Alwaleed participated in a $12.5 billion private offering of convertible preferred securities of Citigroup. The new direct investment was made alongside an exclusive group of leading international investors. The Prince converted the preferred shares in 2009 into common shares (voting shares).
Prince Alwaleed has 7% (voting shares) through KHC in News Corp. and KHC that is 95% owned by Prince Alwaleed, is the second largest shareholder in News Corp after the Murdoch family.
The New York Plaza that is owned 50% by HRH through KHC underwent a $400 million renovation and reopened a few years ago. The hotel is managed by Fairmont Raffles Hotels International (FRHI) in which KHC holds a substantial interest.
