US awards prestigious Legion of Merit medal to Kuwait Amir

THE Middle East Times would like to add its voice of congratulations to the Amir of Kuwait His Highness Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah for receiving the Legion of Merit (Chief Commander) from US President Donald Trump. HH Amir has provided much-needed leadership, and a humanitarian one at that.

US President Donald Trump has awarded the Legion of Merit to the Amir of Kuwait His Highness Kuwait Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, the White House announced.

"A leader in the Middle East for decades, HH the Amir has been a truly unwavering friend and partner to the United States," a White House statement read.

It added that HH the Amir "provided indispensable support to the United States throughout Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and the Defeat-(IS) campaign." "The Amir is also an unparalleled diplomat, having served as his nationآ’s Foreign Minister for 40 years," it noted.

"His tireless mediation of disputes in the Middle East has bridged divides under the most challenging circumstances." It affirmed that Trump "is very pleased to award this honour to his dear friend, the Amir." The statement noted that "the Legion of Merit, Degree Chief Commander, is a rarely-awarded, prestigious decoration that can only be bestowed by the President, typically to chiefs of state or heads of government of other countries. The honour was last awarded in 1991." It indicated that HH the Amir's eldest son, Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmed Al-Sabah "will accept the award on behalf of the Amir in a private ceremony."

Sheikh Nasser Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said received the Legion of Merit, from US President Trump on behalf of his father.

He said that during the event he voiced much thanks and appreciation to the US president for this good gesture which showed that the Amir, and Kuwait, is held in high esteem by the US Administration.

It also reflected recognition of the great role and unremitting effort of the Amir for promoting strategic relations with the US based on partnership and friendship forged over several decades.

Deputy Amir and Crown Prince Sheikh Nawaf received a congratulatory cable from Prime Minister Sheikh Sabah Khaled on the US honour.

In the cable, Sheikh Sabah Khaled expressed his pleasure in conveying sincere greetings and congratulations to HH Amir Sheikh Sabah.

This honour shows His Highness the Amir's efforts and pioneering role on both regional and international levels, Sheikh Sabah Khaled said.

In his cables, Sheikh Ahmad Nasser expressed pleasure in the award granted by US President Donald Trump. He also expressed, on behalf of the foreign ministry's staff best wishes and a speedy recovery to HH Amir Sheikh Sabah.
