Feast of the Assumption

Our Lady of Lebanon Cathedral – Harris Park

My brother priests and dear religious sisters,

Dear guests and parishioners of Our Lady of Lebanon Parish,

Dearly Beloved in Christ,

“Mary, Fragrant Rose, pray for us that we may be the sweet fragrance of Christ.”

"مريم، يا وردة فواحة عطرة، اطلبي لنا أن نكون عطر المسيح الطيّب."

1.         Although it had been celebrated for over 1600 years, the dogma of the Assumption was declared by Pope Pius XII on 1 November 1950. At the time, it had a special significance not only for the Catholic Church but also to the whole world. This declaration came after World War II, which had resulted in the deaths of millions of people with all the atrocity of the concentration camps, atomic weapons and death from starvation and wars. The dignity of human life had been debased in a way that you cannot imagine.

2.         By declaring the dogma of the Assumption of Mary, the Church countered this attack on humanity and held up human life as very precious in the eyes of God. Like Mary, we are all destined for heaven, for glory and for holiness. As such, every human life is worthy of respect and protection, especially the life of the weak and vulnerable.

3.         Today, we celebrate the feast of the Assumption of Our Lady as a sign of hope for all humanity.  After 69 years of declaring the dogma of Assumption, many things have changed in our world, but unfortunately, we feel that the attack on the sanctity of human life and the threat to human dignity are more dangerous than ever before.  We are witnessing in our society a movement of death that is finding its way through legislation. And I speak, in particular, of the Bill that is now before the NSW parliament, to decriminalise abortion. This glorious feast is inviting us all to be leaders in building the culture of life, not supporting the movement of death, to be proud in defending and protecting life from conception until the natural death, and not to allow the murder of babies at any stage of the pregnancy. It is our mission and our duty to reaffirm that every human life is a gift from God and as such should be welcomed, protected and promoted.

4.         Brothers and Sisters, the Assumption reveals to us that the loving Father who planned the very first moment of Mary’s life with such extraordinary care also planned her very last moment just as carefully. Through the dogma of Immaculate Conception, we believe that Mary was preserved free from the stain of original sin. And at the last moment, she was preserved from the corruption of the grave when she was assumed body and soul into heaven.

5.         The Immaculate Conception focuses on the soul. The Glorious Assumption emphasizes the body. Both are important. They were made for each other. “The body, and it alone, is capable of making visible what is invisible: the spiritual and the divine. It was created to transfer into the visible reality of the world the mystery hidden since time immemorial in God, that is God’s love for man, and thus to be a sign of it, ” writes Saint John Paul II. Our bodies can help us procreate, spread the message of God, enjoy the wonders that God has created in this world and attain holiness. At death, our soul separates from our body.  The human body decays and the soul goes to meet God. But we believe that at the Resurrection, our souls will reunite with the glorified body, through the power of Jesus' Resurrection.

6.         Dearly beloved, we gather for this Solemnity this evening in this beautiful Cathedral of the parish of Our Lady of Lebanon, Harris Park. It is a hive of activity, one of our leading parishes. It is a good place with which to become involved, and a centre from which involvement in the wider world is based. So there are committees and projects here to join in, and undertakings in the outside world which are launched from Our Lady of Lebanon: such as charitable outreach, and soon the nursing home.

7.         The good news tonight is that the construction of Our Lady Aged Care Centre has started and it is very significant project for our community: the need to care for our elders who need more intensive care has been before our eyes for quite some time, and at times it seemed closer to realisation than at other times. Building a nursing home is a sign of hope in our community, and we trust that it shall be ready for opening by January 2021.

8.         I will take this opportunity to mention that the statue which crowns the Cathedral needs to be replaced, due to its structural issues. Now, after a long search, we believe that a satisfactory model is within view, and should be available for viewing by Christmas of this year.

9.         But now, allow me before I conclude to say few words in Arabic, highlighting the importance of this celebration in the life of faithful and the Church:

أيّها الأحباء،

عيد انتقال أمنّا مريم العذراء بالنفس والجسد الى السماء، هو من الأعياد الاساسيّة في تقليدنا الماروني. ورغم أن الاحتفال بهذا العيد هو قديم جداً بتاريخ الكنيسة إلا أن عقيدة الانتقال أعلنها البابا بيوّس الثاني عشر منذ 69 سنة، اي سنة 1950.  ويتميّز هذا العيد بأبعاد روحية وكنسيّة كثيرة، إلا ان الاحتفال به هو احتفال بالرجاء الذي يملأ قلوب المؤمنين الذين يكرمون العذراء والدة الاله والرب  يسوع المسيح.

ويأخذ هذا العيد أهمية خاصة عند أبناء وبنات هذه الرعيّة المباركة، رعية سيّدة لبنان في سدني اوستراليا، هذه الرعيّة النابضة بالحياة الروحيّة والرسوليّة، والتي تجد في هذه العيد، فرصة مناسبة لتجتمع بايمان ومحبة حول العذراء مريم، أمّ الله وأمّ الكنيسة. وما أجمل اللقاء لإكرامها وطلب شفاعتها ونحن نردد الصلاة بحسب الليتورجيّا المارونية قائلين: "مريم، يا وردة فواحة عطرة، اطلبي لنا أن نكون عطر المسيح الطيّب، نفوح به في كل العالم."

فعلى مثال العذراء مريم، نحن مدعوون أولاً لأن نحمل الرب يسوع في قلوينا فيكون حاضراً في حياتنا، وعلينا بالتالي أن نحمله الى العالم، ونكون رائحته الطيّبة، في الشهادة له وللقيم الانجيليّة، ونصبح علامات للرجاء في وسط عالم يتخبط باليأس والاحباط.

ومن علامات اليأس والفشل التي تواجهنا اليوم في ولاية نيو ساوس ويلز، هو مشروع قانون ما يسمّى باصلاح الرعاية الصحيّة الانجابيّة، الذي يهدف، على عكس ما يوحي عنوانه، إلى تبرير جريمة قتل الحياة البشرية في بدايتها أي الجنين في الأحشاء، عن طريق تشريع الاجهاض حتى اللحظة الاخيرة من الحمل قبل أن يبصر الطفل النور.

أيها الاحباء، نحن نؤمن بأننا أبناء الحياة، وأن الحياة عطيّة مقدسة من الله، ونحن نؤمن أيضاً بأننا مؤتمنين على نعمة الحياة وعلى استقبالها، وحمايتها واحترامها ضد تيّار الموت والشرّ الذي يظهر بأشكال متعددة وتشريعات مختلفة. لذلك نرفض كل هذه التشريعات التي تنشر الموت وتبرر القتل، وتتناقض بالتالي مع بناء ثقافة الحياة التي نسعى جاهدين الى نشرها في مجتمعنا وعالمنا.

قالت العذراء مريم: "لأن القدير صنع بي عظائم، واسمه قدّوس"، هذا الكلام يفتح أمامنا آفاقاً جديدة للرجاء، لا ترتبط بقدراتنا الشخصيّة والانسانيّة على تغيير الأمور، إنما تنبع من ايماننا بأن الرب قادر على كل شيء، وهو يصنع الكثير من الامور في حياتنا وعالمنا، ليُفهمنا عظمة محبته واهتمامه بكل واحد منّا. 

والرجاء الذي نعيشه بهذا العيد يرتكز على فضيلة اساسيّة في العيش المسيحي وهي التواضع. وقد عبّرت العذراء مريم عن ذلك عندما قالت، "حطّ المقتدرين عن الكراسي ورفع المتواضعين". لقد اختار الله الاب مريم لتكون أما لابنه، لأن ايمانها المتواضع، فتح قلبها على سرّ عظمة الله ومحبته. فعلى مثال العذراء مريم نتعلم ان التواضع ليس تحقير للذات انما هو اعتراف بالخير والصلاح الموجود في كل انسان، لأننا جميعاً مدعوين أن نكون على صورة الله ومثاله.

وبالختام، يقول القديس فرنسيس ده سال، "أي ابن لا يريد أن تكون أمّه الى جانبه في المجد"، وهكذا نفهم معاني عيد الانتقال الذي يقودنا الى القول في نفس السياق: "أيّ أم لا تريد أولادها حولها في المجد." وهكذا نشعر ونفهم من منطلق الايمان والرجاء، أن العذراء مريم تريدنا أن نكون الى جانبها وجانب ابنها الرب يسوع في الملكوت السماوي بعد هذه الحياة على الأرض.

أجدد معايدتي لكم جميعاً بهذا العيد المبارك، خصوصاً لكهنة الرعيّة الذي يسهرون على خدمتكم الروحيّة والرعويّة، بكل تفاني واخلاص. وإني أصلي معكم للعذراء مريم، أمّ الله وأمّ الحياة، أن ترافق مسيرتنا في بناء ثقافة الحياة، لكي نكون شهوداً حقيقيين للرب يسوع المسيح. 

10.       Dearly Beloved,

Every Marian feast is really a celebration of Jesus. Mary’s holiness derives from her role in the life of her son. In her humility, when we unite ourselves to her, she leads us to Jesus, as the famous saying goes: to Jesus through Mary.

11.       Mary shows us how to say yes to God’s word so deeply that it becomes flesh in us. She shows us how to bear and give birth to Christ in our lives, how to share his death and resurrection, and how to welcome the Holy Spirit. May her example always be a shining light for us that we may be fragrant roses in this world, spreading the sweet scent of Jesus. Amen.
